The Friends of German Culture started presenting German Language Feature Films in 2009. Each film presentation includes coffee and cake for the viewers at a nominal cost of $5.00 (the charge is for coffee and cake only- movie is free). Please see the listing of movie titles for the first 4 months of 2009- Spring 2010.

January 30, 2009 – 3PM “SISSI” The young Bavarian Princess Elisabeth (SISSI) meets the Emperor of Austria (Franz Joseph) under strange circumstances. Their attraction for each other soon becomes a love connection and Franz Joseph asks SISSI to become his wife and future the Empress of Austria and the Queen of Hungary. Featuring Romy Schneider and Karlheinz Boehm, Color, 102 Minutes, German Language, No English Subtitles.

February 21, 2009 - 3PM “SISSI the Young Empress” (Part 2.) SISSI is now Empress of Austria and her charm has also won her the hearts of the Hungarian minorities who crown her as Queen of Hungary. SISSI has troubles adjusting to the Austrian Court and her domineering Mother-in-law. Featuring Romy Schneider and Karlheinz Boehm, Color, 106 Minutes, German Language, No English Subtitles.

March 21, 2009 – 2PM “SISSI Fateful Years of an Empress” (Part 3) SISSI cannot adjust to the riggers of the Austrian Court and becomes ill. Per her Doctors recommendation, SISSI departs for warmer climates and leaves the Austrian Court behind. The movie culminates with a state visit to Italy (Venice) with the Italian Aristocracy snubbing the Royals from Austria but there is a surprising ending. Featuring Romy Schneider and Karlheinz Boehm, Color, 106 Minutes, German Language, No English Subtitles.

April 18, 2009 – 2PM “I often think about Piroschka”. A German student travels to a small village in Hungary for a vacation. There he meets the charming daughter (Piroschka) of the local train station attendant and a vacation romance blossoms between the two. The down to earth Piroschka is involved in many comical situations which endears her even more to her German suitor. Featuring Liselotte Pulver and Gunnar Moeller, Color, 92 Minutes, German Language, No English Subtitles.


Saturday - May 16, 2009 – 2 PM. “AS FAR AS MY FEET WILL CARRY ME” Based on the true story of the incredible journey of a German soldier Clemens Forell and his dramatic escape from a Siberian labor camp after WWII. Featuring Bernhard Betterman, Irina Panteava and Michael Mendl. Color, 122 Minutes, German Language with English Subtitles.

Saturday – June 13, 2009 - 2PM. “THE CAPTAIN OF KOEPENICK” The funny story of a down on his luck Berliner during the time of Kaiser Wilhelm II who purchases an Officer uniform at a second hand shop and takes over the city hall of Koepenick with the help of the local military garrison. Featuring Heinz Ruehmann, Hannelore Schroth, and Martin Held. Color, 88 Minutes, German Language, No English Subtitles.

Friday – July 17, 2009 – 2PM “KOLBERG” This film which was made during the time of the Third Reich and was 3 years in the making portrays the valiant resistance of the besieged city of Kolberg during Napoleon’s drive to conquer the German federations. Featuring Heinrich George, Kristina Soederbaum and a cast of thousands. Color, 107 Minutes, German Language with English Subtitles.

Saturday – August 22, 2009 – CANCELLED “THE TREES ARE BLOOMING AGAIN IN THE PRADER”. In Vienna the Crown Prince of Austria meets the daughter of a court counselor and falls in love with her and allows himself to escape beneath his position. Featuring Gerhard Riedmann, Nina Sandt, Johanna Matz and Theo Lingen, Color, 92 Minutes, German Language, No English Subtitles.
